A PLA 2022 Virtual Conference On-Demand Session

PLA 2022 Virtual Conference logo. How do we reimagine library spaces and services to meet evolving community needs? Carroll County Public Library (CCPL) in Maryland will share how they worked with the community to open a new, innovative library space, Exploration Commons at 50 East, offering a high-tech makerspace, commercial teaching kitchen, and meeting and classroom spaces. Hear how CCPL navigated design, fundraising, construction, staffing, partnerships, and opening this unique library space focused on education and workforce development.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this on-demand webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Design and advocate for their own innovative space for community learning;
  • Identify new methods for hiring and operating innovative library spaces; and
  • Create and implement education and workforce development programs.

Panelists

Jennifer Bishop is the Exploration Commons Manager at Carroll County Public Library, focusing on creating innovative experiences and spaces to connect the community to new learning and workforce development opportunities. She enjoys launching new library initiatives, including virtual and augmented reality experiences, introducing robots with Pepper, and opening a new community makerspace and teaching kitchen. Jen is an avid Maker, AR/VR enthusiast and Raspberry Pi Certified Educator.

Bob Kuntz is the Director of Operations and Innovation at Carroll County Public Library. Throughout his career Bob has used the latest technologies to improve access to the learning, information, and entertainment services that libraries provide. Bob keeps his hands dirty in his free time by working on websites for libraries around the state of Maryland and dabbles with Tableau to better tell the library’s story.
