Learn how to make any weeding project a public relations dream! In this on-demand webinar, "Awful Library Books" co-authors Holly Hibner and Mary Kelly discuss communication, transparency, and timing. Get the staff and patrons on board, be clear with your weeding plan, and set a pace that allows for careful decision making. They also talk about how to dispose of weeded materials properly and respectfully. No one wants their library in the headlines for a weeding fiasco, so learn how to weed smart!

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this on-demand webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Be able to identify three alternatives to dumpsters for removal of weeded library materials;
  • Create a weeding plan for both a large project and for ongoing, regular collection maintenance; and
  • Communicate their weeding plan to prepare staff and patrons for a weeding project in three ways.

Who Should Attend

This on-demand webinar is intended for public directors and administrators; collection development librarians; library trustees and board members; and Friends of the Library groups. All attendees should be familiar with the general concept of weeding/deselection.

Panelists

Holly HibnerHolly Hibner is the Adult Services coordinator at the Plymouth District Library in Plymouth, Mich. She has a mild obsession with weeding (ok, maybe not so mild), and can usually be found in the stacks taking inventory. She also loves all things techie and the challenge of a good reference question. Holly is the co-author with Mary Kelly of the book Making a Collection Count and the popular blog "Awful Library Books."

 

Mary KellyMary Kelly is the Youth Services librarian at the Lyon Township Public Library in South Lyon, Mich. Mary is passionate about collection quality, and can be found digging through the stacks searching for that odd title or hunched over the computer looking at spreadsheets. She also molds young minds through Toddler Disco. Mary is the co-author with Holly Hibner of the book Making a Collection Count and the popular blog "Awful Library Books."
