Pride All Year Round: Rainbow Family Storytime

Join us to learn how a small group of staff proposed, planned, presented, and expanded identity-supporting storytimes explicitly designed for queer families with young children. Rainbow Family Storytime provides safe and joyful early-learning experiences for parents, caregivers, and children ages birth - 5 who fall under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella in order to build community. Takeaways include best practices and resources to create your own Rainbow Family Storytimes or incorporate into storytimes you offer for any audience.

By taking this webinar, participants will:

  • Recognize and be able to advocate the need for queer-focused, identity-supporting storytimes.
  • Learn foundational knowledge to establish a vision, goals, and plan for offering a similar service.
  • Have a resource toolbox for planning and presenting Rainbow Family Storytime.

Rebecca Chernay (she/her) is a Youth Librarian at Multnomah County Library. As a youth librarian, Rebecca provides storytimes and other programming for youth of all ages, connects youth and families to library resources, and feels really lucky that she gets to turn her favorite pop music into storytime songs. Rebecca enjoys baking, playing tabletop games, and trying to impress her family with movie trivia.

Alec Chunn (he/they) is a Youth Librarian at Multnomah County Library, where he provides storytimes, Teen Council, and all things in between. Alec reviews for Kirkus, has written for SLJ, Booklist, and Horn Book, and served on the Caldecott, Stonewall, and Kirkus Prize committees. Working on Rainbow Family Storytime is their favorite program yet—second only to a class on sewing felt Pikachus.

Jen May (they/them) serves youth and their families at the Kenton branch of Multnomah County Library in Portland, OR. A librarian for 20+ years, Jen can say without a doubt that Youth Librarianship is the best vocation, ever! Outside the library, Jen enjoys hanging out with goats, playing Dungeons & Dragons, and listening to queer romance audiobooks.
