Advanced eCourse: Introduction to AI

An ALA Continuing Education and SJSU iSchool Advanced eCourse

Did you know you don’t need a programming background to learn how artificial intelligence (AI) works? This 12-week course is designed for working library professionals who wish to grasp the core concepts and theories of this technology’s inner workings and applications.

Learners will explore the major concepts, theories, and tools of AI, including machine learning, neural networks, natural language processing, and computer vision. Participants will learn through lectures, reading materials, and practical examples and will come to understand how AI technologies function and impact various industries. With a foundation in the concepts, and a survey of current and emerging use cases, professionals can confidently engage with AI today and tomorrow.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental concepts and theories underpinning Artificial Intelligence.
  • Describe how machine learning algorithms function and their real-world applications.
  • Understand key concepts and techniques, including neural networks, natural language processing, large language models, and computer vision.
  • Identify ethical considerations and societal implications associated with AI.
  • Interpret AI outputs and critically evaluate AI-driven tools and services.
  • Engage in informed discussions about AI developments and their potential impacts.

Dr. Souvick Ghosh, an assistant professor at the School of Information at San José State University, is an information and computer scientist whose research on human-centered AI aligns with the current shift in AI research towards more user-focused, ethical, and responsible systems. Dr. Ghosh is interested in the ethical application of AI and its conversational capabilities within complex sociotechnical systems. Particularly, his focus is to improve the lives of marginalized communities through the application of trustworthy AI. In recent years, he received several extramural and SJSU grants, including the InterPARES Trust AI research project (co-applicant) and the Mozilla CIRCLE Project (co-PI). His goal is to create a Responsible Computing Center at SJSU for AI research, education, and outreach. The efforts of Dr. Ghosh and his colleagues were mentioned in the White House fact sheet.
