Teach, Not Celebrate

Teach, but don't celebrate is the theme of religious literacy in our libraries. We will discuss how kids want to see themselves in our storytimes and give tips for including holidays in our programs without selling them or catering to the dominant culture of our society.

Learning Objectives:

  • We will learn how to be more socially just when we include holidays in our storytimes.
  • We will see examples of works that can be included in our storytimes.

Andrea Cleland has worked in public libraries in Michigan, Washington, Colorado, and Maine. She is passionate about storytime and early childhood education and is an advocate for social justice and belonging in libraries. When she is not dancing with preschoolers in storytime, she is dancing in the air as a circus performer or hiking in the mountains.
