Genealogy 101 for Librarians: How to get started assisting family history researchers

This session will provide information specialist with the basic skills needed to assist patrons researching their family history. Attendees will learn about resources and methodology to help provide reference services to family history researchers.

By the end of this webinar, the participant will be able to:

  • Determine what resources their institution offers to assist patrons researching family history
  • Perform a reference interview to determine the patrons' research goals
  • Recommend documents to help the researcher organize pertinent family history information
  • Become familiar with some genealogy resources that are generally available.

The speaker Tamika Strong received her Master's of Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh and her Master's of Archival Studies at Clayton State University. She spent 15 years serving Georgia's citizens as a librarian in the DeKalb County Public Library System and the Georgia Public Library Service. She spent more than six years assisting researchers by connecting them to the vast resources available at the Georgia Archives

Mrs. Strong is active in several local, state and national genealogy organizations. She has presented workshops at various institutions, including her Alma Mater, Emory University, the DeKalb History Center, and the Digital Library of Georgia. A thrill of the hunt type of researcher, she enjoys assisting others in discovering their ancestors while trying to find her own.
