Streaming Music Services for Libraries

As paid digital services increasingly replace physical media, libraries are looking to meet their patrons' needs by providing a similar digital experience. For music, this means commercial-free streaming services that can be accessed with a library card. 

Participants in this webinar will learn about options for providing streaming music collections to library patrons. Discussion of the most common platforms will include billing and lending models as well as label and artist coverage. Presenters will share tips and tricks for managing and promoting these services to patrons. The session will also introduce other digital music content that libraries may want to consider adding to their collections.

Kristie Nelsen is the Virtual Services Librarian for the Anchorage Public Library where she maintains the library website and digital resources and serves as a reference librarian in the Adult Services department. She has delivered workshops and webinars to audiences of all ages on using the library’s digital services. She recently completed an extended term as chair of Music Library Association's Public Libraries Committee, overseeing the development of a sheet music collection development guide for public libraries. She has also served as the MLA Jazz and Popular Music Interest Group Coordinator. In addition to an MLS from the University of North Texas, she holds an MM in Music History and Literature from the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

Elizabeth (Liz) Berndt is the Librarian for Music/Assistant Curator at New York University and Adjunct Faculty in the School of Library and Information Sciences at Simmons University, Boston. She is the Music Library Association (MLA) Liaison to the International Society of Contemporary Music and Advisor for the MLA Music Library Students and Emerging Professionals Interest Group (MLStEP). As a contributing editor for Notes, the Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association, she writes an annual column on trends in music publishing and library collecting. She holds a Master of Library Science degree with a music librarianship specialization from Indiana University, graduate certificates in Learning Design & Technology and Museum Studies from the Harvard Extension School, and Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Music Education from the University of Kentucky and Central Michigan University.
