Engaging Teens with Multi-Session Programs

Ensuring teen participation and retention in library programming can be a challenge. By designing intentional, high-quality teen programs, we can provide participants with opportunities to create, build connections with peers, and develop real-world skills that will prepare them for future pursuits.

In this webinar, Anna Kopinska from Plano Public Library will share various strategies utilized in creating the library's highly successful Movie Maker Camp program that have contributed to its repeated success. Movie Maker Camp is a 5-session program held over a week that allows teens to create a short movie trailer using industry-standard tools to develop their writing, acting, filming, and editing skills. Plano Public Library has hosted five sessions of Movie Maker Camp since 2019 and has successfully engaged teens each year with consistent attendance.

This webinar will explore the benefits of collaborative, project-based programs for teens and library staff and how this style of program can reinforce positive relationships between teens and the library. The presenter will show how the characteristics that made this program so successful can apply to various program concepts that will keep teens coming back for more.

After participating in this webinar, learners will:

  • Be able to apply design strategies to create engaging, multi-session teen programming that encourages active participation
  • Have strategies for creating skill-based programming that promotes collaborative behavior, encourages creative exploration, and fosters positive relationships among teen participants and library staff
  • Be able to assess participant experiences and skill attainment, identify opportunities to enhance future teen programs, and explore how this framework can be integrated into programming for other audiences and settings

Anna Kopinska is a Public Services Librarian at Plano Public Library. She develops and delivers programs for patrons of all ages. She enjoys educating patrons and staff alike in the creative uses of technology and visual design.
