On-Demand Webinar: What Candidates Want: Revamping your Recruitment

Interested in improving your recruitment practices? This talk will highlight practical steps managers can take to make the search process kinder, gentler, and more inclusive. Drawing from a recent survey of 446 job hunters (spanning multiple library types), we’ll hear some hair-raising stories and look at how to avoid some of the least effective hiring practices. Then we’ll explore the foundations of a well-considered recruitment strategy, delving into current research as well as techniques from programs such as Oregon State University’s Search Advocates. You will leave with a practical guide to revamping your recruitment processes and reaching great candidates, including a resource list that will help you delve further into current best practices and legal considerations.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • List three practical, achievable steps their organization can take to improve their hiring processes;
  • Read a job ad closely and identify items to add or remove in order to make the ad more equitable; and
  • Communicate why clarity and kindness are important in the hiring process.

Who Should Attend: Librarians and staff who lead or participate in hiring.

Presenter:

Emily Weak (MLIS) is the founder of Hiring Librarians (hiringlibrarians.com). She also currently works as the Saturday librarian for Chattahoochee Technical College and as the Equity Advisor Coordinator for the Networking California Library Resources Grant project. However, the bulk of her career has been in public libraries, most recently as Senior Librarian for Programming, Outreach and Engagement at the Oakland Public Library. She is proud of having driven the bike library for Oakland, having started the seed library at Mountain View Public Library, and having served on the board of directors of the California Library Association from 2018-2021. Before becoming a librarian, she was variously: a circus student, a cheesemonger, and a grocery store manager. She still loves cheese and does a decent back bend.
